Microfossil: The Exquisite Beauty under the Sea

Special Exhibition of the 110th Anniversary of NTM!

This exhibition demonstrates four distinct groups of marine microfossils: Foraminifera, coccolithophore, diatom and ridiolaria. Through the combination of modern technique and aesthetic, these microscopic creatures show the astonishing variation of size and shape.

We can also grasp a glimpse of Victorian naturalists’ perception of exquisite beauty by tracing back to the 19th century’s achievements of micropaleontology in Europe through this exhibition.

Taiwan’s geological investigation had extended since Japanese colonial period, the large foraminifera were the major dating tool. After 1945, due to the Central Geological Survey and Petroleum Exploration established, the small foraminifera’s investigation started out.
